This course looks at all the main aspects of deep geological disposal of radioactive waste that are needed to form the components of a national programme, with an in-depth option on the issues underlying the siting of deep geological repositories - the programme stage that often proves most problematic. The course is in two parts: Week 1 dealing with siting issues and Week 2 addressing the fundamentals of geological disposal comprehensively. The two parts can be selected separately or together:

The course begins with a review of siting approaches and relevant criteria from both a national and international perspective, highlighting the successful and unsuccessful examples. Case studies of selected siting programmes will be presented in detail by the experts involved. These experiences are then used to identify and discuss selected critical issues central to developing siting programmes and making siting decisions. An exercise in identifying and applying the key technical and non-technical factors that need to be taken into account in the siting process forms an integral part of the course.
The course will be ideal for those who are in charge of a repository site selection programme. It will also benefit stakeholders and local representatives in potential siting areas.

This comprehensive course is designed so that you can reconfirm and update your present knowledge - from evaluating the wastes to be disposed of, right through all the technical stages of identifying and implementing geological disposal, to the societal interactions required of repository development projects. The majority of the programme consists of interactive lectures and discussions in an informal classroom atmosphere with sufficient time allocated for you to raise questions and discuss. Evening sessions will enable you to present and discuss your own national programme with tutors and the other participants from around the world. You will spend one day at the Grimsel Test Site (URL operated by Nagra) where you will directly learn about experiments to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of geological disposal.
The course will be ideal for professionals working in the implementation, regulation or technical support areas at every stage in their national programmes. It will be particularly valuable for those who may just be starting their career on disposal projects and who need to see geological disposal in its widest context.

Under the auspices of the IAEA, nationally developed Underground Research Facilities (URFs) and associated laboratories are being offered for use by other nations.
