TIMODAZ training course PDF Print E-mail

7th - 9th July, Lausanne, Switzerland

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 10th June 2008

The EC FP6 Integrated Project TIMODAZ (Thermal Impact on the Damaged Zone around a Radioactive Waste Disposal in Clay Host Rocks, www.timodaz.eu) runs for four years from 2006-2010 and will involve various training activities based upon the scientific and technical results of the project.

Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory in Opalinus ClayThis first 3-day training course is organised by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and ITC School, in collaboration with the TIMODAZ partners. A guided visit to the Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory is also included.

Detailed course agenda, overview and requirements are now available (Course Agenda PDF File 70 kb) and further information will follow shortly.

Objectives

The main objective of the training course is to provide contextual training on the "Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical and Chemical (THMC) behaviour" of clays and claystones to the younger generations currently involved in the research areas of TIMODAZ but may lack the overall picture of the nuclear waste management context. In addition the course can be used to provide the required training to new members of the radioactive waste management community.

Who should attend?

Young professionals as well as scientists entering the research areas of TIMODAZ, preferably with Master in civil engineering or geotechnical and geological engineering (with good basic knowledge of geomechanics). Staff from nuclear agencies working in performance assessment and using results could also attend. Scientists and students from outside the project are most welcome. One ECTS credit can be received by EPFL based on a succeeded report on the performed course exercises.

Course Fees

Course Fee (including lunches, coffees and excursion to Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory): 170.- CHF / person

Course Dinner: 70.- CHF / person

The course fee is due within four weeks of your registration. Registration is not guaranteed until we have received the course fee. If you have to withdraw from the course after paying your fee, it will be refunded in full up to 20th June 2008. After this date, it is not refundable.

The OBRA project within the EU FP6 programme is assessing the feasibility of creating an Observatory for long-term governance on radioactive waste management in Europe. If an Observatory is established after the OBRA project is completed, it will contribute to the better governance of radioactive waste by providing mechanisms for all stakeholders to have access to the knowledge that has been generated by successive EU programmes, and in the wider international context, in both the scientific and social sciences fields.
