TIMODAZ training course PDF Print E-mail

7th - 9th July, Lausanne, Switzerland

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 10th June 2008

The EC FP6 Integrated Project TIMODAZ (Thermal Impact on the Damaged Zone around a Radioactive Waste Disposal in Clay Host Rocks, www.timodaz.eu) runs for four years from 2006-2010 and will involve various training activities based upon the scientific and technical results of the project.

Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory in Opalinus ClayThis first 3-day training course is organised by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and ITC School, in collaboration with the TIMODAZ partners. A guided visit to the Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory is also included.

Detailed course agenda, overview and requirements are now available (Course Agenda PDF File 70 kb) and further information will follow shortly.

Objectives

The main objective of the training course is to provide contextual training on the "Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical and Chemical (THMC) behaviour" of clays and claystones to the younger generations currently involved in the research areas of TIMODAZ but may lack the overall picture of the nuclear waste management context. In addition the course can be used to provide the required training to new members of the radioactive waste management community.

Who should attend?

Young professionals as well as scientists entering the research areas of TIMODAZ, preferably with Master in civil engineering or geotechnical and geological engineering (with good basic knowledge of geomechanics). Staff from nuclear agencies working in performance assessment and using results could also attend. Scientists and students from outside the project are most welcome. One ECTS credit can be received by EPFL based on a succeeded report on the performed course exercises.

Course Fees

Course Fee (including lunches, coffees and excursion to Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory): 170.- CHF / person

Course Dinner: 70.- CHF / person

The course fee is due within four weeks of your registration. Registration is not guaranteed until we have received the course fee. If you have to withdraw from the course after paying your fee, it will be refunded in full up to 20th June 2008. After this date, it is not refundable.

    IAEA

An 8 day course, with field visits, held in the Czech Republic & Switzerland

This eight-day course is presented by ITC in collaboration with the Radioactive Waste Repository Authority of the Czech Republic (RAWRA) and the Swiss National Co-operative for Radioactive Waste Management (Nagra). It is a component of the IAEA Network programme for 2009. The course is designed for geological repository project managers and scientists, regulatory agencies and geosciences, environmental and engineering companies involved with both site investigation and the construction of underground rock characterisation facilities.

The objective of the course is first to take participants through the steps of planning, carrying out and evaluating surface-based investigations at prospective geological repository site. This first part of the course will take place in the Czech Republic. We will then look at the important transition to underground characterisation work at sites selected for detailed evaluation. The second part of the course, which will be held in Switzerland, will thus examine techniques for underground rock characterisation and will also consider the planning of activities in deep rock characterisation facilities.

  • PRELIMINARY : October – 4th November 2009: Peine, Germany

This eight-day course is presented by ITC in collaboration with and hosted by DBE TECHNOLOGY, and with the participation of the Clausthal University of Technology, Germany. It is a component of the IAEA Network programme for 2009. The course is designed for project managers and scientists, regulatory agencies and geoscientific organisations concerned with the development of geological repositories for long-lived wastes in sedimentary formations. The programme is developed and considerably extended from a course with a similar topic, held in 2007. This time, there is more emphasis on safety assessment methodology in sedimentary environments, as well as sections on the technical fundamentals of geological disposal and societal aspects of repository siting and development. Visits will be made to two underground facilities; Konrad and Gorleben.

IAEA Support
  • IAEAUnder the auspices of the IAEA, nationally developed Underground Research Facilities (URFs) and associated laboratories are being offered for use by other nations. The URFs and laboratories form a “Network of Centres of Excellence” for training in and development of waste disposal technologies. If your organisation is from a participating country in the IAEA training network scheme you may be able to request financial support from the IAEA for courses run as part of the Network scheme.

Assembly of Members

The annual Assembly of Members will be held in Hotel-Restaurant Blume, Baden , Switzerland , on 10th March 2009. The principal business will be to review activities in 2008 (our 6th year of operation) and discuss the forward plans for 2009 and 2010.

Our Assembly is the main opportunity for Members to meet and provide input and guidance for the development of the Association, so the Executive really encourages you to attend and take an active part in the discussions.
