ITC Courses

The ITC programme for 2008 currently offers a range of five courses and workshops designed for both specialists and generalists in radioactive waste management. The courses will be run in Switzerland, Japan and the USA. With the exception of the OBRA workshop (which is intended principally for local community representatives associated with this EU 6th Framework project), all the courses are open to any interested participant. The courses in the USA and Japan are broad in structure and content, covering all key aspects of geological disposal of radioactive wastes. Each course has a specific flavour that will highlight issues and work currently taking place in the host countries. The June 'Cement' course and the July TIMODAZ course are more specialised in nature, aimed at scientists and engineers designing or assessing repositories. Nevertheless, they provide a full background to the use of cementitious materials and to the engineering and evaluation of excavations in clays for the more generally interested participant. Most of our courses involve field visits to relevant laboratories, demonstration facilities, repositories or other underground facilities.

  • Cement and cementitious materials in the geological disposal of radioactive waste

    2nd-6th June, 2008 - Eurajoki, Finland

    REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 30th April 2008

    Co-hosted with Posiva. The course will cover all aspects of the use of cementitious materials in radioactive waste disposal, ranging from an introduction to basic cement chemistry, through repository design and practical aspects of the use of cement and concrete in repository construction. The course will be a balanced mix of class time, site visits (with a choice of either the ONKALO facility or the VLJ repository) and case studies, broken down into self-contained learning modules.

  • OBRA project workshop

    6th - 9th April, Meiringen, Switzerland

    The OBRA project within the EU FP6 programme is assessing the feasibility of creating an Observatory for long-term governance on radioactive waste management in Europe. If an Observatory is established after the OBRA project is completed, it will contribute to the better governance of radioactive waste by providing mechanisms for all stakeholders to have access to the knowledge that has been generated by successive EU programmes, and in the wider international context, in both the scientific and social sciences fields.

  • TIMODAZ training course

    7th - 9th July, Lausanne, Switzerland

    REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 10th June 2008

    The EC FP6 Integrated Project TIMODAZ (Thermal Impact on the Damaged Zone around a Radioactive Waste Disposal in Clay Host Rocks, www.timodaz.eu) runs for four years from 2006-2010 and will involve various training activities based upon the scientific and technical results of the project.

    Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory in Opalinus ClayThis first 3-day training course is organised by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and ITC School, in collaboration with the TIMODAZ partners. A guided visit to the Mt. Terri Rock Laboratory is also included.

  • Geologic Disposal of High Level Waste

    2nd to 5th September 2008, Las Vegas, USA

    This course covers international experience in key aspects of deep geologic disposal of spent fuel and high level radioactive waste that are needed to form the components of a national program, with a special emphasis on the current US HLW program. The course will take place immediately before the 2008 International High-Level Radioactive Waste Management (IHLRWM) conference, which is also being held again in Las Vegas.

  • Fundamentals of Geological Disposal

    October 20th - 26th, 2008 - Tokai, Japan

    This course is run in collaboration with JAEA and is organised within the framework of the IAEA Network of Centres of Excellence. As with previous 'Fundamentals' courses, all aspects of geological disposal will be covered, but with special emphasis on factors in the Japanese programme. There will be visits to both the ENTRY and QUALITY large-scale experimental facilities at Tokai and to the Mizunami URL construction site and the Tono Geoscience Centre.

IAEA Support

  • IAEAUnder the auspices of the IAEA, nationally developed Underground Research Facilities (URFs) and associated laboratories are being offered for use by other nations. The URFs and laboratories form a “Network of Centres of Excellence” for training in and development of waste disposal technologies. If your organisation is from a participating country in the IAEA training network scheme you may be able to request financial support from the IAEA for courses run as part of the Network scheme.
